ODP Reform Promised
Poor l'il feller.Thank you to MTB for organizing yesterday's event. Here's a run down of my notes. Please check the podcast at Meet the Bloggers for the first hand material.
First, Redfern let the entire High & Broad controversy hang on John Kohlstrand. His explanation was that Kohlstrand, not employed by the ODP, was in the ODP building using wifi. Kohlstrand's actions were his own, and Redfern believes in personal accountability. So his defense comes down to a 1st Amendment, "I own the theater, but I didn't know that guy was going to shout 'FIRE!'." Unless Kohlstrand has something to say, it sounds like he will be given all the blame.
Redfern also replied to Tim Russo's questions on the race for Erie County Democratic Chair, saying that he'd tried to work with David Giese, but been rebuffed. He posed the slate to unseat Giese as a "more in sorrow than anger" measure that had been forced upon him.
In reply to Psychobilly's (Red? Pale? Famine?) question about mending fences with Hackett supporters, Redfern assured that everything was good. He says Hackett will be traveling the state in support of candidates this year. As they say in the stable, they're going to need a lot of duct tape.
I asked about what will be done to give meat to the base. Redfern spoke about the ODP blog being used to bring their legislative ideas to voters. Good idea, wait for the follow through.
Terra spoke about her frustration with the ODP's response to volunteers, an issue I've posted on below. Redfern talked more about the ODP's web presence being built up. Yet again, he's playing catch up after years of mismanagement.
In response to a question from BSB, he talked about the need to ridicule and attack Ken Blackwell, instead of being drawn into wedge issues. That would be a change for Ohio Dems.
I asked about the ODP's co-existence with activist groups. Redfern said the groups have shown ODP areas that need to be worked on. He emphasized the need to increase grassroots presence in the rural counties. Given their capitulation of Delaware County, I wish Eric had been there.
He told OH2nd that the ODP, with 100K from the DNC, is creating voter rights teams to get out in front of Republican suppression of elections.
My overall impression is that Chris Redfern is well spoken and agile. The answers were good. Democrats are now locked in with Redfern's candidates for 2006: Strickland and Brown. This election will prove if he represents an actual change, or is a continuation of the institutional failure of Ohio Democrats. And questions linger about what methods were taken to shape the '06 ticket.
I'll post again about Joe Sulzer and the downticket Dems. For more competent discussion, check out BFD, BSB, Ohio 2nd, and Gloria Ferris.

All that I would add is that he better know he will be held accountable for how the Hackett situation was handled as well as results based on the chosen path. Bank on that!
Good to see you up and about. Wish I could be up at Bag o Nails tonight.
Grandpaboy,
it was good to meet you last night. One thing liketo mention...there was a question asked "What should the volunteers who want to help do if the ODP isn't helping them find useful volunteer roles?" (I'm paraphrasing from memory.)
One thing we need, we need very much, is good precinct-level organization. Find you central committee representative, the person who organizes your ward. Ask of you have a precinct captain. If you don't, volunteer to be one. If you do, volunteer to help. Precinct captains walk their precinct a few times each precinct cycle, at a minumum. The more volunteers you have in each precinct, the easier the walking is, and the more time you can spend with each Democrat or Independent.
If your central committe representative doesn't have a good role for you, then consider replacing him. Central committe posts are elected, and they are *not* ceremonial positions. We need active ward leaders, we need active precinct camptains, and those precinct captains need their own hosts of volunteers.
Take a look at Ward 21, in northern Clintonville. They organized, the rallied the troops, they print up & distribute a newsletter, and because of their GOTV power they attracted candidates like Paul Hackett and Michael Coleman to come speak to their backyard lemonade-and-hot-dog fall rally.
I'm not suggesting people shouldn't volunteer for campaigns. Indeed, if you like the idea of getting a physicist into the Ohio House we should talk, but the best way to ensure that your community's concers are addressed is to mobilize your neighbors, organize, and get candidates to come to you.

Thanks for doing this, old man.
I appreciate your efforts, and am listening to the podcast right now.
Your reward(I hope) is in the mail.
Jimmy - Excellent point.
Scott - That's great, cuz I doubt my reward's in heaven.
Jimmy,
thanks for the tip. I actually was randomly dragged to precinct captain training a week or so ago, and while it sounds like a lot of work, there isn't one in my precinct, so I told them I'd be happy to do it. Now I'm waiting for them to call me back. Glad to hear that I might be on the right track.
I'd say this is pretty compentent, GP.
Now, the horse asking for a fresh roll of duct tape to mend bridges was Famine.
And I agree with your impression of Redfern, he's good. Slick.
Which means, I need to see the baby. Otherwise, I'm not sure anything happened and this was all false labor.
Dirtgirl,
Welcome to Columbus. I'm glad you're a precinct captain. That's a good thing you're doing. I'm one as well, and for the same reason. We needed one.
With the campaign I'm not really filled with free time, but since I'm out walking anyway I told my Ward boss (ward 21) that I can do it. I was at precince captain training a few weeks ago, also.
There is Camp Wellstone training in Cleveland over the weekend next month, March 10-12. I went to Camp wellstone's candidate track last string in D.C., it's great that they're coming to Columbus. It's cheap, it's excellent training for retail-level (door-to-door) civic activism, and its fun. Check it out.
Email me, or give me a call (208-8202). What precinct are you running? It sounds like you're near District 22, if not in it.
